En definitiva, veamos el “envejecimiento” como algo inapelable pero sin duda modificable.
Y, todo ello, como un gran número de oportunidades de todo tipo que deberán estimular la investigación y el emprendimiento en muy diversas facetas.

Más de un centenar de perdonas han participado en el II Simposio Científico de la Fundación Gadea por la Ciencia, uno de los mayores lobbies científicos de Europa que se ha celebrado en el Hospital General Universitario Ramón y Cajal, de Madrid. De la mano de veinte de los máximos exponentes mundiales en investigación y tratamiento del cáncer, han actualizado los últimos avances en este campo.

Centrado en la inmunoterapia y la medicina de precisión, el simposio abordó temas como el tratamiento del cáncer de mama metastástico o las terapias CAR-T, que el Ministerio de Sanidad, Consumo y Bienestar Social está estudiando incorporar a la Cartera Básica de Servicios del Sistema Nacional de Salud para combatir los cánceres de la sangre.

Además, el encuentro hizo patente la necesidad de incrementar el compromiso de España con la l+D+i para recuperar el retroceso vivido en los últimos años.

Mariano Barbacid, presidente del Consejo Científico Asesor y miembro del Patronato de la Fundación Gadea por la Ciencia, aseguró que «es muy importante que en España haya una fundación, como Gadea Ciencia, que reúna a científicos de todas las ramas y pueda trabajar como lobby desinteresado para presionar a los responsables políticos y empresas. Hay que hacer ver a los políticos la importancia que tiene la ciencia para el país porque en este momento la financiación ha retrocedido a niveles de hace 18 años. Habría que doblar el presupuesto para Ciencia durante este año y los dos siguientes para ponermos donde deberíamos estar…, pero es una quimera».

También sirvió para reivindicar el papel de la mujer en la Ciencia. Sónia Guedán, del Institut d´lnvestigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), señaló que «en las carreras de medicina y biomedicina hay muchas más mujeres que hombres durante el doctorado y posdoctorado, pero somos menos las que llegamos a ser jefas de grupo y además se nos da menos visibilidad. Tenemos muchos obstáculos que superar, como en muchos campos».

El director de la Fundación Gadea por la Ciencia, José Antonio Gutiérrez Fuentes coincide con sus colegas en que «la Ciencia es un servicio imprescindible en los planteamientos y esquemas de un estado moderno que debe ser favorecida por todos, en beneficio de todos» por ello, la Fundación Gadea Ciencia «hará todo lo posible para canalizar y favorecer iniciativas de colaboración social y científica en España para que el Sistema Español de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación, con especial atención al papel de los investigadores, las universidades, los centros de investigación y las empresas avance y recupere el terreno perdido en los últimos años.

«Sin ninguna duda, desde PMFarma nos sumamos a ese llamamiento para que la Ciencia recupere su importancia, y que la investigación en este campo, especialmente en el de la Salud, vuelva a representar una inversión mayoritaria para los avances que todos deseamos en este campo. Thus, in a global environment of increased competitiveness and demand, and promoted and organized from the Area of Knowledge of Mathematics, the GSF presents its first Scientific Symposium on the theme “Big Data and data Science for learning in the Digital World” .

Big Data refers to the treatment of huge data sets that with traditional methods of storage, access and analysis would result
unapproachable. Big Data is certainly an issue that is beginning to revolutionize various aspects of our lives. In this symposium, sixteen researchers, leaders in the field, will review the state of the art today with special emphasis in those applications aimed to address the main social demands. The event is presented as an interdisciplinary meeting of experts from the fields of applied mathematics, artificial intelligence, data science, automated learning, operations research and statistics.

In addition to more methodological presentations, there will be sessions aimed at programmes in Medicine and Health, Geosciences and Meteorology, Communications and Transport, Environment, Social Sciences, and Economics and Finance. Also, will be host to participants who wish to present their work in poster sessions.

This symposium is the first of a series organized by Fundación GADEA for Science (http://gadeaciencia.org/), a new institution, whose objective is to contribute to the improvement and advancement of the Spanish System of Science, Technology and Innovation, with special attention to the role of researchers, universities and companies.

Así, en un ambiente global de creciente competitividad y exigencia, y promovido y organizado desde el Área de Matemáticas, la FGC presenta su I Simposio Científico sobre el tema “Big data and data science for learning in the digital world”.

Se entiende por Big Data el tratamiento de enormes conjuntos de datos que con los métodos tradicionales de almacenamiento, acceso y análisis serían inviables. Big Data es sin duda un tema que está empezando a revolucionar diversos aspectos de nuestras vidas. En este simposio, dieciséis investigadores, líderes mundiales en el tema, pasarán revista a la actualidad con especial énfasis en aquellas aplicaciones orientadas a atender las principales demandas sociales. El acto se plantea como una reunión interdisciplinaria de expertos provenientes de los campos de las Matemáticas aplicadas, la Inteligencia artificial, la Ciencia de datos, el Aprendizaje automatizado, las Operaciones de investigación y la Estadística.

Además de las presentaciones más metodológicas, habrá sesiones orientadas a aplicaciones en Medicina y Salud, Geociencia y Meteorología, Comunicaciones y Transporte, Medio ambiente, Ciencias Sociales, y Economía y Finanzas. Asimismo, se dará acogida a los participantes que deseen presentar sus trabajos en las sesiones de pósters.

  • Fundación GADEA por la Ciencia will pay special attention to the role of researchers, universities and companies aiming to improve and promote progress of science, technology and innovation in Spain.

 

Madrid, 4 May 2017. The «Rocasolano» Chemistry and Physics Institute (CSIC) witnessed this morning the presentation of the new Fundación GADEA por la Ciencia; a non-profit organisation born with the objective of promoting and improving the Spanish Science, Technology and Innovation system.

Fernando Tejerina, chairman of the board of Fundación GADEA por la Ciencia, José Antonio Gutiérrez, director of Fundación GADEA por la Ciencia and the biochemist Mariano Barbacid, chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council (CCA) of the foundation took part in the presentation event.

All of them highlighted how important it is to «promote and encourage research and science» in order to «generate a more competitive society that guarantees a future of prosperity and independence for Spanish citizens», as highlighted by José Antonio Gutiérrez, director of the foundation.

Its objectives include focusing efforts on promoting communication and interaction among scientists through symposiums and annual discussion forums, in addition to promoting a quality scientific education.

As a participatory body, Fundación GADEA por la Ciencia has a Scientific Advisory Council (CCA-FGC), chaired by the researcher Mariano Barbacid, that includes Spanish researchers with excellent qualifications and proven experience in the various scientific areas: Biomedicine and Health, Economy and Society as well as Basic Science and Technology.

It is especially important for this entity to promote a scientific culture in society, as well as encourage public-private cooperation as R&D&i in Spain holds a limited relation between the business scope and the academic and scientific areas. Fernando Tejerina, chairman of the Board of Fundación GADEA stressed that «knowledge is the raw material and talent is the yeast that ferments and transforms it into social prosperity». This is why, he adds, «resources destined to education, training, research, innovation and entrepreneurship are considered an investment and not an expense». Furthermore he adds that «Never before have these been so important to improve the quality of life of society as a whole as in the present».

This is the message that dominated the presentation to the public of Fundación GADEA por la Ciencia, which congregated an excellent representation of the Scientific and Research Community. According to Mariano Barbacid, chairman of the Scientific Advisory Council of Fundación GADEA: «There is little philanthropy for Science in Spain. I hope this sets an example for investments towards this noble and necessary cause».

]]> The on-going challenge of Science https://gadeaciencia.org/the-on-going-challenge-of-science/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-on-going-challenge-of-science Wed, 02 Aug 2017 06:30:46 +0000 http://gadeaciencia.org/?p=1681 Quite often we hear or read how our most significant researchers, and the younger ones too, rate the health of Spanish science as «deteriorating rapidly» or even «dying». It would be easy to fall into defeatism in light of such a poorly stimulating scenario, especially if we accept that the ultimate cause of the problem is our attitude; something that is difficult to change.

In this context, what can the newly born Fundación GADEA por la Ciencia provide? Clearly, not much if we resignedly believed there is no solution to the problem. But I believe this attitude will only lead us to perpetuate the problem and delve in our deficiencies, especially when there are symptoms that encourage cause for hope. There have been changes over the last fifteen years that can help to surmount our historic scepticism and that lead us to believe it is possible to correct this path.

Perhaps the most transcendental change of our time is communication/globalisation; a phenomenon that is affecting our life at all levels, and science in particular. Our best scientists no longer work in isolation, but do so in cooperation with scientists from other countries; they compete for international resources in an open research environment that seeks talent wherever it is. Science, which has always been global, is more so now than ever before and in real time. Geographical borders have blurred and networked work as well as the development of the Web 2.0 have contributed to generate a new mentality, to absorb an international interactive culture, which is perhaps the remedy that most directly attacks the root of the aforementioned problems. Remaining external to this reality would be basically suicidal and lead us to marginality as a society and as a country. Dr. Santiago 100 years ago, wrote:

Undoubtedly, scientific culture must have a bearing on society. Using the simile proposed by Fernando Baquero, scientific knowledge grows in the same way as a pile of sand: «In order to increase the height of the vertex a little, one must add much sand to extend the support base». Therefore, apart from dedicating more resources to research, we must ensure that our society understands the benefits of having a top level science. Hence, the importance of improving education at all levels; to instil in children a taste for knowledge, making questions and seeking answers, to develop in them an entrepreneurial spirit; to recognise and reward researchers and their teams, contributing to make them admired by society and, more specifically, by the youngest; to continue promoting discussion, reflection and investment in science to show society that scientific discoveries notably contribute to improve our quality of life; to commit to the complicity of the universities and companies to transform knowledge into realities that create richness and contribute solutions.

At Fundación GADEA por la Ciencia we want to contribute to close the R&D&i circle, favouring the cooperation of social, economic and business players in an international environment in which Spain plays a prominent role in terms of European Research. Only through this conviction will we find the basis of a stable future of progress.

There is evidence in our scientific environment that change is possible, that «it can be done», and that our arrival in a global world has already started to change our way of facing a better future. We must all be committed, especially our own scientists, with their own voice, loud and clear.
