Rafael Canton

He is the Head of the Clinical Microbiology Department at the University Hospital Ramón y Cajal (Madrid, Spain) and is associated Professor of Clinical Microbiology at School of Pharmacy at Complutense University (Madrid, Spain). His research activity is developed within the Spanish Network for Research in Infectious Diseases (REIPI, http://reipi.org/) and Institute Ramón y Cajal for Health Research (IRYCIS, http://www.irycis.org).

His clinical and research work is focussed on antimicrobial susceptibility testing, mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and interplay with dispersion of high-risk clones, and respiratory tract infections (mainly in cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis patients). He has published more than 410 articles in medical journals, 50 chapters in teaching books and had several communications on international meeting and congresses. His H factor is 58 with more than 12,500 citations (2017).

He is currently Clinical Data Coordinator of the European Committee for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) and member of the Spanish Antimicrobial Committee (COESANT). He is also an active member of the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease (ESCMID) and Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (SEIMC). He has been Scientific Secretary of Spanish Table for Normalization of Antimicrobial Susceptibility and Resistance (MENSURA, 1990-2007), Founder President of the Study Group of Mechanisms of Action and Resistance of Antimicrobials (GEMARA) from SEIMC (2000-2005), Vice-president of the National Commission of the Speciality of Microbiology and Parasitology (2007-2014), President of Madrilenian Society of Microbiology (SMMC) (2009-2012), Ad hoc member the Executive Committee of ESCMID (2012-2016), Chairman of European Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) (2012-2016), President of SEIMC (2016-2017), Associated Editor of Clinical Microbiology and Infection journal during eight years and member of the editorial board of Journal Clinical Microbiology during ten year. Currently he is member of the editorial board of Microbial Drug Resistant, Drug Resistance Updates, Enfermedades Infecciosas y Microbiología Clinica and Revista Española de Quimioterapia journals. He is editor of the Clinical Microbiology Procedures of the SEIMC (www.seimc.org).
