Jimenez-Barbero, Jesus

Jesus Jimenez-Barbero

He is Ikerbasque Research Professor and Scientific Director of CIC bioGUNE since November 2014. He studied Chemistry at the Autonomous University of Madrid (1982) and received his doctorate in Organic Chemistry in 1987, working at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of CSIC. Between 1988 and 1992 he carried out several research stays at the University of Zürich (Switzerland), at the National Institute of Medical Research in Mill Hill (United Kingdom) and at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh (USA). After his return to Madrid, with a position as a senior scientist at CSIC, began working in the area of molecular recognition, especially in the study of interactions between proteins and ligands, possible drugs or probes. He has also been a visiting professor at the École Normale Supérieure (Paris, 2004), Pierre et Marie Curie University, (Paris, 2009), at Milano-Bicocca (2009-2012) and at the UPV-EHU since 2016. In 1996 he got the promotion to Senior Research Scientific of CSIC and in 2002, to Research Professor, already at the Center for Biological Research of CSIC. In this center he developed his scientific activity until 2014 and was Director of the Chemical & Physical Biology Department from 2009 to 2014.

The most relevant results of his research are collected in more than 500 scientific publications in international journals, two books and 7 patents, with more than 12000 citations received. He has also delivered more than 250 lectures in different institutions and symposia around the world and has directed more than 25 doctoral theses. He has been awarded the Janssen-Cilag Prize 2003 of Organic Chemistry of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ), with the 2008 Bruker Prize of the RSEQ Magnetic Resonance Group, the Gamboa Winkler Award of the Chemical Society of Hungary in 2017 and, especially, the International Whistler Award in Carbohydrate Chemistry in 2010. He has also been appointed as ChemPubSoc Fellow and as Member of the European Academy of Sciences. He is the current President of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (since 2012) and the Manager of the Basic Chemistry Program of the Chemistry Program of the State Research Plan of MINECO (since 2009). He has been President of the International Carbohydrate Organization (2012-2014). He is a member of the Editorial or Advisory Committee of numerous international journals related to Chemistry (Chem Eur J, ACS Chem Biol, ACS Omega, ChemBioChem, ChemMedChem, Eur J Org Chem and others) and is a member of the external advisory committee (SAB) of several scientific institutions, such as IRBB (Barcelona), ICIQ (Tarragona), CIQUS (Santiago), BIONAND (Malaga) and the CIPF (Valencia). His scientific interests are centered in the field of Chemical Biology, especially in discovering the mechanisms of molecular recognition involved in protein-protein or ligand-protein interactions in processes of biomedical interest essential for life.
