Llorca, Javier

Javier Llorca

Scientific Director and Founder of the IMDEA Materials Institute and Professor of Materials Science at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, where he is the head of the research group on “Advanced Structural Materials and Nanomaterials”.  A Fulbright scholar, he is Fellow of the European Mechanics Society, member of the Academia Europaea and has held visiting positions at Brown University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Indian Institute of Science and China Central South University.

He has pioneered the systematic application of computational tools and multiscale modeling strategies to establish the processing-structure-properties relationships of structural materials., so new materials can be designed and optimized in silico, before they are actually manufactured in the laboratory. His scientific contributions have led to many publications in international peer-reviewed journals (Science, Progress in Materials Science, Advanced Materials, etc.). He has also played a very active role in the transfer of technology to Spanish and European industries. One of his most relevant contributions in this area has been the development of multiscale modeling strategies for composite materials. They constitute the foundation of the modern techniques of virtual testing, which are starting to be used by the aerospace industry to minimize the number of costly mechanical tests to characterize and certify composite materials and structures and to optimize their performance.

He has received the Research Award of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, the Research award from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the Gold Medal of the Spanish Society of Structural Integrity and the Career Award of the Spanish Society of Materials. He is currently chair the European Mechanics of Materials Conference Committee and member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Engineering Science.
