Jose Lopez-Barneo

M.D. and Ph.D., is a Full Professor of Medical Physiology and Biophysics and Research Director of the University Hospital “Virgen del Rocío”. Between 1978 and 1993 he did postdoctoral stays at the CNRS (Paris), University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Pa), Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, Mass) and New York University (New York). He has been a visiting Professor at Stanford University (Palo Alto, Ca; August 1990-September 1991) and Columbia University (New York; March 2016-September 2016). Since 2006, he is the founding Director of the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS). Dr. López-Barneo’s main research interests are related to the cellular and molecular mechanisms of oxygen sensing and neurodegeneration, as well as cell therapy applied to Parkinson’s disease. He is past-President of the Spanish Neuroscience Association and the Spanish Society of Gene and Cell Therapy. He was the founding director of the National Excellence Research Network on Neurodegenerative Diseases (CIBERNED).

Professor López-Barneo has received numerous distinctions and awards, among which are: Prize Juan Carlos I of Scientific and Technological Research (1993), Medal of Andalusia (1993), Prize Jaime I of Scientific Research (1998), Prize Maimónides for Scientific Research in Andalusia (2002), Prize Lilly of Basic Biomedical Research (2003), Prize Javier Benjumea of Focus-Abengoa Foundation (2006), Prize FAMA of the University of Seville (2009), Chair “Santiago Grisolía” (2010) and King Felipe VI Medal of the Civil Merit (2015). He is a member of the “Academia Europaea-Physiology or Medicine” (1997) and the “European Molecular Biology Organization” (2000).

Dr. López-Barneo has served in the “Editorial Board” of several international journals, such as The Journal of Physiology, Physiological Reviews and Pflügers-Archiv/European Journal of Physiology, among others. Dr. López-Barneo is a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Seville (2004) and the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery in Seville (2012), as well as a corresponding member of the National Royal Academy of Exact and Natural Sciences (2005). Since 1983, Dr. López-Barneo research group has received continuous financial support from the “Plan Nacional de I+D”. In 2001, he received the first research grant of the Juan March foundation and between 2007-2016 he was funded by the Botín Foundation. Currently, he is the principal investigador of an European Research Council Advanced Grant (2015-2020).
