Francisco Marcellan

He was born in Zaragoza in 1951, Licenciado (Bachelor) in Mathematical Sciences in 1973 in Universidad de Zaragoza, he was recognized with the university award “Premio Extraordinario de Licenciatura”. Further, he also received the “Premio Nacional de Licenciatura en Matemáticas”, a Spanish award. He obtained a PhD degree in the same University in December 1976.

Since October 1991 He is Catedrático (Full Professor) of Applied Mathematics in the Departament of Matemáticas, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, after positions as Associated and Full Professor in the universities of Zaragoza, Santiago de Compostela and Politécnica de Madrid. He is also a faculty researcher of the Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas (ICMAT-CSIC-UAM-UCM- UC3M) since December 2013.

He was visiting researcher in several universities as Paul Sabatier (Toulouse), Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris), Denis Diderot (Paris), Lille as well as visiting professor in the School of Mathematics, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA and Departamento de Matemática, Universidade de Coimbra, Portugal. He was a Pesquisador Visitante Especial in Departamento de Matemática Aplicada, Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) with the support of the program of the Brazilian Government “Ciencia sem Fronteiras” in 2013-2015.

His research activity is focused on approximation theory, orthogonal polynomials, special functions and their applications in mathematical physics. More precisely, he deal with structural properties of orthogonal polynomials with respect to different inner products and combining tools from matrix analysis to operator theory, classical analysis and harmonic analysis.

He has been recognized with six research periods by CNEAI. From 1989 he has leaded 30 research projects, granted by Spanish and international funding agencies. He has been the supervisor of 38 doctoral dissertations.

Author of 270 regular papers published in scientific journals and 70 papers in proceedings. He was also involved as co-editor of 20 proceeding volumes as well as six mathematical monographs.

He has deserved as member of organizing and scientific committees in 90 scientific meetings and invited or plenary speaker of 100 international scientific events. He is also a member of the Editorial Boards of scientific journals like Journal of Approximation Theory and Electronic Transactions in Numerical Mathematics, among others.

As academic tasks, he has been the Chair of the Engineering Department (1991-1995) and the Department of Mathematics (2009-2013) as well as Vice-rector of Research (1995-2004).

As responsible of quality assessment and research policies he has been the Director of ANECA (2004-2006) and Secretario General de Política Científica y Tecnológica in Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia of Spain (2006-2008).
