Elvira pioneered the field of Theoretical Nuclear Physics in Spain, and more generally the area of Physics: Science and Technology as she was the first woman physicist to gain a university full professor position in 1982 in a complex context, competing with eight male colleagues, with her as the only woman and winner. Her unquestionable pioneering role in Spain and her leadership in Nuclear Physics have been recognized in Spain and abroad. She has been the first theoretical physicist to work under a scientific research contract at the Center for Theoretical Physics and at the Laboratory for Nuclear Science in MIT (USA). She was also the first woman to become a member of the Board of Directors of ECT* (European Center for Theoretical Physics and related Areas) and of NuPEEC (Nuclear Physics European Coordination Committee). Also Elvira has been the first woman scientist in Spain to obtain two prestigious national and international recognitions: APS Fellow (USA), elected among european members of the American Physical Society (2005), Medal RSEF-BBVA Foundation (2008), gold medal of the Royal Spanish Physics Society.
